Genetic Resources — General Information
The term “Genetic Resource” refers to as any plant, animal, microorganism or virus holding a functional unit of heredity to be exploited for the purposes of food production and biological conservation. The theme was selected based on the UFV recognized expertise and competence in scientific production and training of human resources for research on Genetic Resources. In addition, the UFV is known for its history of contribution in the Genetic and Improvement of the main cultivated crops and cattle in Brazil. UFV has mainly developed research involving swine, cattle, poultry, soybeans, corn, coffee, beans, sugarcane, etc. The UFV is also responsible for maintaining in its facilities several germplasm banks of plant species cultivated by man or presenting agroeconomic potential. It is possible to highlight the germplasm banks of tomato, soybean, corn, beans, sugarcane, mango, citrus, coffee, macaúba, among others, which hold immense genetic variability, a fundamental aspect for the breeding of plant species. This collection maintained by UFV and the competence of its faculty in Genetic and Improvement attract students, institutions and companies from all over the world, who seek to study the material conserved for use in breeding programs and in the development of new agricultural products. Similarly to the other priority themes for the internationalization program and consolidation of international research partnerships and graduate programs, studying our genetic resources is fundamental to UFV international recognition and increased ability to attract resources for research.
GOALS
- Training human resources with international experience in Genetic Resources.
- Promoting short term courses and / or regular classes for graduate programs to be conducted at the UFV by international professors in partnership with our faculty.
- Consolidating international partnerships in Genetic Resources through the granting of scholarships for sending UFV faculty as visiting professors to an international institution and hosting international visiting professors at UFV.
- Developing Genetic Resources joint research projects with international groups.
